Cover image showing the exterior of the former St. Agnes Church

A local author, Robert Mowry, recently published a book outlining the history of select Detroit parishes.

Years of Faith: The Ethnic Heritage and History of Ten Catholic Parishes of Detroit features ten chapters with each chapter focused on one of ten parishes. Those featured include: St. Agnes, St. Anthony, St. John Cantius, St. Stanislaus, St. Albertus, St. Rita, St. Theresa of Avila, St. Elizabeth, St. Thomas the Apostle and Immaculate Conception. Of these, only St. Elizabeth remains as an active parish.

The former St. Stanislaus Church located near the I-94/I-75 interchange.

Detailed descriptions are given for each church, including the year constructed and the architect, while dozens of photos show the beautiful artwork and architecture. The book also outlines the history of each parish: their establishment, growth, parish life, decline and eventual closing.

    PLENARY INDULGENCES FOR NOVEMBER
I On All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2) a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit any parish church and there recite one Our Father and one Creed.

IIOn all the days from November 1 though November 8, a plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Poor Souls, is granted to those who visit a cemetery and pray even if only mentally for the departed.
    Conditions for both indulgences:
    1. Only one plenary indulgence can be granted per day.
2.It is necessary to be in the state of grace, at least by completion of the work.
3.Freedom from attachment to sin, even venial sin, is necessary; otherwise the indulgence is only partial. (Attachment to a particular sin, not sin in general.)
4.Holy Communion must be received each time the indulgence is sought.
5.Prayers must be recited for the intentions of the Holy Father on each day the indulgence is sought. (No particular prayers are prescribed. One Our Father and one Hail Mary suffice, or other suitable prayers.
6.A sacramental confession must be made within a week of completion of the prescribed work. (One confession made during the week, with the intention of gaining all the indulgences, suffices.)

In 1748, Fr. Armand De La Richardie, S.J., came from Quebec to establish a mission church serving Native converts living in modern-day Windsor. It became known as "The Mission of Our Lady of the Assumption among the Hurons of Detroit."

In 1765, sixty French families petitioned for their own parish nearby. Instead of segregating the two groups, they were combined under the Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption. A new church measuring 60' x 30' was built to replace the 1749 chapel which was falling into ruins. In June of 1801, nearly 500 converts were confirmed at the parish.

Fr. Potier, a Jesuit missionary, became the first pastor and served in the capacity until his death 32 years later. The parish used two more churches before the cornerstone of the present edifice was laid July 7, 1842 and opened three years later.

In 1870, Basilian Fathers from Toronto were invited to the parish. They accepted and have been there since. In 1874, the belltower and sanctuary were added to the church. At the same time, stained glass windows were installed in the sanctuary and apse. The brilliant windows in the nave were added in 1882.

While Our Lady of Assumption Church is in Windsor, it is barely across the river, and stands alongside the Ambassador Bridge. It is also the oldest continuous parish in Ontario. In the metro Detroit area, only the parish of Ste. Anne de Detroit is older. It is also the oldest extant church in the region and three years older than S.S. Peter & Paul (Jesuit).

The nearby Rosary chapel used for private prayer and daily Mass.

Built by French Canadians, the French language appears on the Stations of the Cross and throughout the church.

The Salve Regina is inscribed around the perimeter of the sanctuary.

The Sacred Heart side altar and nearby Infant of Prague.

The beginning of the Asperges Me is inscribed in the holy water fonts.

Pairs of angels are found in the ceiling of the nave.

A statue of the Canadian martyrs stands in one corner of the narthex;  St. Anthony stands in the opposite corner.

For the past six years, Assumption Church has hosted the St. Benedict Tridentine Community and celebrated a regularly-scheduled Tridentine Mass.

The church has a laundry list of needed repairs, totalling $10 million, which the parish currently cannot afford. The church has deficiencies with its roof, foundation, masonry, ceiling, floor tiles, and much more. Because of these issues, the church is currently closed until necessary funds are raised.

Currently, the parish is NOT accepting donations. However, they will accept pledges. In the meantime, the St. Benedict Tridentine Community will celebrate EF Mass at Holy Name of Mary (Windsor) at 7:00pm every Tuesday and at 2:00pm on the first Sunday of each month. All other Sundays, 2:00pm Mass will be at St. Alphonsus Church (Windsor).

At the beginning of the 20th Century, as parishioners from St. Albertus slowly moved away, Polish immigrants petitioned for another parish. In 1907, the parish of St. Hyacinth, known in Polish as Święty Jacka or Święty Jacek Odrowąż, was established with Fr. Sylvester Kolkiewicz as the founding pastor. The first Masses were held at the home of Martin Tesmar, one block south of the eventual, permanent site. The first church was built in only sixteen days, in December of 1907, and located where the parking lot is today.

A combination church and school was built in 1908 and it still stands today. Felician Sisters staffed the new school under the direction of the first principal, Sr. Mary Celine. The current church is dated to 1922 and was designed by the firm of Donaldson and Meier, architects of many Detroit churches.

Msgr. Stefan Woznicki was appointed pastor in 1936 and elevated to auxiliary bishop two years later. Despite his responsibilities as an active bishop, Woznicki maintained pastoral duties for the next fourteen years.

An outdoor Marian shrine, dated to 1966, commemorates 1,000 years of Christianity in Poland. In 1981, nearby Immaculate Conception was forced to close. After this, many of their parishioners moved to St. Hyacinth. The parish high school closed only ten years after the first graduating class. In 1990, the elementary school followed suit and the remaining Felician Sisters left the parish. To this day, the former school building is still used as a social hall.

In 2002, the church underwent a massive restoration. Major cleaning and repairs to the canvas, statues, walls and stained-glass windows were accomplished. The cost of the painting alone was $120,000.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus stands at the middle entrance, flanked by a Polish flag, a U.S. flag, and logo for Detroit's tricentennial.

The sanctuary is well-preserved and one of the most elaborate of any church in Detroit.

Fr. Janusz Iwan, a Polish-born priest, has served as pastor since 2006.

The Last Supper is engraved on the facade of the freestanding altar.

Three cupolas are found in the ceiling of the nave, each showing particular saints around the perimeter.

Icons of saints, particularly the evangelists, surround each cupola. Corinthian columns line the side aisles.

Reflecting their Polish heritage, images of Our Lady of Częstochowa and Pope St. John Paul II appear in front of the left side altar.

St. Joseph, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Anthony of Padua also stand at the same shrine.

A large crucifix and Infant of Prague stand near the right altar.

St. Stanislaus, a martyr and the first Polish-born bishop, appears in the left side of the nave near a Marian shrine.

St. Maximilian Kolbe appears in the right side of the nave, near a shrine to the parish's patron.

Dennis Orlowski, a local artist of Polish descent, was commissioned to paint a mural depicting the Polish ancestry of the parish. On one side, it shows historic Polish churches of the Poleton neighborhood. Another side depicts Polish customs such as a Wigilia.

St. Hyacinth is regularly included in historic church tours and was the first to host the Detroit Mass Mob.

The parish has some unique, annual traditions. In the spring of each year,  St. Hyacinth hosts a Mass to celebrate Polish for dance groups with as many as 200 dancers in attendance. The parish "Banana Festival" is held the first weekend of October every year.

The parish website includes a robust history report and detail hagiography of the patron.

We previously featured St. Hyacinth three years ago.

    Nativity of Our Lord Parish

Nativity of Our Lord was established in 1911 in what was, at the time, the unincorporated village of Leesville. Prior to this, most Catholics in the area attended either St. Anthony to the south or Assumption Grotto to the north.

Founding pastor Fr. Frederick Heidenreich celebrated Mass in a school building at Gratiot and Harper until the fledgling parish built ts own school/church on McClellan Avenue a few years later. The first rectory was a converted barn. The school opened in 1914 with 400 students, a teaching staff six of Dominican Sisters and one lay teacher.

In 1916, a convent adjacent to the school was completed with the capacity to house twenty sisters. Beforehand, the sisters lived on the third floor of the school.

Edward A. Schilling of the firm Van Leyen, Shilling, Keogh and Reynolds was the architect of the permanent church while it was constructed by F. H. Goddard Co. Before construction started in 1924, Leesville was annexed by the City of Detroit and Nativity’s membership had grown enough to justify construction of the large edifice that still serves the parish today.

Even though construction was not yet complete, the first Mass held in the church was on Christmas Day, 1926. Fr. Heidenreich died in 1928 before the church was finished and his successor, Msgr. John S. Mies, oversaw the completion. Bishop Michael Gallagher dedicated the church in 1929. Fr. Bernard Geller succeeded to the pastorate in 1934 and served the parish for nearly 30 years.

Stained-glass windows were fabricated by the Conrad Schmitt Studios of Milwaukee and installed in 1936.

Fr. Jerome Singer was appointed pastor in 1971 and maintained that role until his recent death on November 20, 2014, at the age of 77. Capuchins from St. Bonaventure are currently ministering to the parish but no long-term successor has assigned yet. Sr. Jolene Van Handel, a Dominican sister, has been at Nativity for nearly 50 years.

Nativity gained some parishioners following the closure of two nearby parishes: St. Anthony (1857-2006) as well as St. John Berchmans/St. Juliana (1932-2004). Nativity of Our Lord celebrated its 100th anniversary on October 9, 2011. As this time, the parish had 260 registered families.

The Detroit Mass Mob recently visited Nativity on December 7th.

Appropriate for a church by this name, an inscription on the high altar translates "come, let us adore Him," an excerpt from the Christmas hymn Adeste Fideles.

St. Anne with Child Mary, St. Joseph with Child Jesus, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus stand in the sanctuary.

Side altars to the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph are each covered by an ornate apse.

A large crucifix stands in the south transept near a window depicting St. Thomas Aquinas.

A replica of the Pieta stands in the rear of the nave, opposite a baptismal font .

Large, Corinthian columns line the aisles; murals adorn the walls of the transepts.

Floor tiles were made by Detroit's Pewabic Pottery.

Nativity of Our Lord stands near the intersection of Gratiot and I-94 on the eastside of Detroit. Saturday Vigil Mass is at 4:00pm while Sundays bring Mass at 8:30am and 11:00am. Daily Mass is celebrated every weekday, except for Wednesdays, in the rectory at 8:30am.

On the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, one week from today, a Tridentine Mass will be held at St. Leo's Church.

This is Juventutem Michigan's first corporate visit to one of Detroit's historically African-American parishes. All persons of all ages are welcome to attend this liturgy.

Confessions will be be heard before Mass, starting at 6:15 p.m.

The 7:00 p.m. sung Traditional Latin Mass will be preceded by a 6:30 Rosary, at which members will pray in for our two members who have been accepted to formation by traditional institutes and for an increased acceptance of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

St. Gabriel Parish was established in 1915 and the current edifice was built in 1953. The parish high school was closed in 1971 and absorbed by Holy Redeemer. The former parish school is now occupied by Cesar Chavez Academy.

The steeple, which probably used to house a bell, and the front entrance.

A large depiction of the crucifixion adorns the high altar.

Like many parishes in the Southwest Vicariate, the congregation is mostly Latino. As such, St. Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe are located at a side altar. Standing at the opposing side altar is the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

St. Jude and the baptismal font stand in the left transept.

A large crucifix and St. Gabriel stand in the right transept.

Small windows, each about one square foot, are found in the choir loft, vestibule, and transepts.

Fr. Marc Gawronski has served as pastor for the last year. Sundays Mass times are: 9:30am (Spanish), Noon (English), and 7:00pm (Spanish). Confessions are heard at 6:00pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, followed by 7:00pm Spanish Mass. Wednesdays also bring 9:00am Spanish Mass to the parish. First Fridays also bring 7:00pm Spanish Mass.
