Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (Our Lady of the Scapular Parish, Wyandotte)

Polish immigrants, lured by factory jobs, started settling in Wyandotte during the late 1860s. On November 22, 1870, Rev. Fr. Xavier Szulak, S.J., arrived on mission and the Society of St. Stanislaus Kostka was established. Harsh living conditions and a recession in 1875 forced many to leave and the society temporarily dissolved. The society was revived in 1888 and theyattended one of two ethnic parishes in Wyandotte: either the Irish parish of St. Patrick or the German parish of St. Joseph.  Rev. Fr. Vitold Buchaczkowski, from SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary, would minister to the downriver area once a month.
Wyandotte in the late 1800s

Approximately 150 Polish families immigrated to Wyandotte 1888-1898. They first attended St. Joseph, then moved to St. Patrick but sought to establish their own parish. A group of six men bought several lots on Tenth Street, in an area then called “New Jerusalem,” for the future church. The seller, Welch Brothers Realty, also donated eight lots. On September 8, 1899, Bishop John Foley inspected the area and approved. He appointed Rev. Fr. Bernard Zmijewski of Bronson, MI, as first pastor. Fr. Zmijewski arrived ten days later and held Mass at St. Patrick.

Parishioners wanted the patronage of Our Lady of the Scapular but the request was denied by Bishop Foley. The cornerstone of the combination church and school was laid on December 3, 1899, then completed and dedicated on July 8 of the following year. Rev. Fr. John Moneta, a professor from SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Detroit, preached the homily and was assisted by the choir from St. Josaphat's Church, Detroit.

Fr. Constantine Dziuk
Fr. Alexander Grudzinski
Msgr. Adalbert Zadala

Construction of the first church totaled $26,961.15 or more than $700,000 today. This was financed by $7,063.69 in donations, a $15,000 bank loan, and $5,000 from the pastor. Fr. Zmijewski also built a rectory with his own money and started a library filled with 500 volumes of Polish and English books. Fr. Zmijewski petitioned the Felician Sisters to start a school and the request was granted. In September, 1901, they started with two classrooms, for first and second grade, in the basement. the following year, 113 students enrolled.

Disagreements and misunderstanding forced Fr. Zmijewski to be reassigned after six years. His successor, Fr. Frank Sajecki, lasted just one week due to poor health and soon died at the age of 33. Rev.  Fr. Joseph Lempka, who was a Vicar at St. Albertus, succeeded as pastor on April 24, 1906, and spent three years dealing with parish debt. in addition to the debt, a new rectory had to be built for $5,000 because the first one was property of the previous pastor.

Source: Flickr
The first rectory was abandoned and eventually used to treat victims of a tuberculosis epidemic. Twenty Felicians died from their ministry, all of whom age 21 or younger. In 1909, Rev. Fr. Constantine Dziuk was installed as the third pastor and he bought all of the adjacent, vacant property with the desire to expand the parish. Two years later, he was transferred to Assumption Grotto.

Rev. Fr. Alexander Grudzinski succeeded as the fourth pastor in 20 years. His seven-year pastorate saw the construction of the current church. It was designed by Harry J. Rill, also architect of St. Leo's in Detroit, following the 'Polish Cathedral style.' and opened in 1915. A new convent was soon built, a new church organ installed and the school expanded.

The parish quickly went through two more pastors before Rev. Fr. Leon Jarecki came in 1920. He soon added three bells, christened and named them as St. Stanislaus Kostka, Holy Angels, and Queen of Poland. On April 7, 1921, Fr. Jarecki was shot and killed by an unknown murderer when he answered a call at the rectory door.

Rev. Fr. Peter Kruszka soon succeeded as eighth pastor in 22 years and thankfully remained there for 17 years. He established a parish high school in 1928, enlarged the convent and elementary school, and even built a neighborhood heating plant. Failing health forced Fr. Kruszka to go on sabbatical in 1938 however he would not recover and died the following spring.

The parish had a brief administrator before Rev. Fr. Ladislaus A. Krych was appointed by Cardinal Mooney. At that time, the elementary school had an enrollment of 520. Fr. Krych added a kindergarten, organized a school band and orchestra, and bought necessary instruments.

Enrollment continued to climb over the next decade to a total of 737 elementary students.  The parish debt was paid off on January 15, 1946, after nearly fifty years. Fr. Kyrch led renovations of the church and parish grounds until he died from heart disease on March 17, 1956.

Rev. Fr Jerome Juchniewicz took over four years before his death from a heart attack. Rev. Fr. Venanty Szymanski was appointed pastor in September of 1963 and he built a new elementary school building three years later. A financial crisis struck the archdiocese in 1963; six Wyandotte parishes were advised to consolidate to one, central high school and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel refused.

Fr. Szymanski suffered a series of strokes before he resigned in May 1972. Former vicar, Rev. Fr. Stanley Redwick was appointed pastor in August of that year and remained there until poor health forced him to resign in the early 1990s. Rev. Canon Walter J. Ptak succeeded as pastor and remained there until he was reassigned to Ss. Cyril & Methodius Seminary a few years ago.

A Polish sculptor, Czeslaw Dzwigaj, created a statue of St. John Paul II, it was installed outside the southwest corner of the church and blessed by Cardinal Maida on October 31, 2004.

The parish high school closed in 2011 and the elementary consolidated to form St. John Paul II School in Lincoln Park. In 2013, Fr. Mark Borkowski was appointed pastor and the parish merged with St. Stanislaus Kostka (est. 1914). Also in Wyandotte, the former St. Stanislaus Kostka closed shortly afterwards.

Saturdays bring 8:00am Mass, 3:00pm Confessions and 4:30pm Vigil Mass. Sunday Mass is at 6:00am, 8:00am, 10:00am (Polish) and Noon. Daily Mass is at 7:00pm Tu & Th as well as 6:30am M, W, F. First Fridays also bring Adoration 8:30am-10:00am and 5:00pm-6:30pm followed by 7:00pm Polish Mass.

Mt. Carmel Catholic Cemetery, located four blocks northeast of the church, was established in 1865, 34 years before the parish. It has no formal connection to the parish as it is owned and administered by the archdiocese.

Our Lady of the Scapular continues to embrace their Polish heritage with classes focused on making sausage and pierogi, respectively, as well as different art classes and an annual Polish festival in late August.

Farmers began settling along Lake St. Clair in the late 1700s and French priests began ministering to people there in the 1790s. Fr. Francis Badin dedicated a log church in 1825 and the parish was formally organized nine years later.

A chapel was built in 1848 and construction of the current church began at the same site in 1895. The church was designed in a French Gothic style by Harry J. Rill, also architect of St. Leo's Church. Construction was finished in 1899 at a cost of $23,000 or approximately $600,000 today.

Stained-glass windows were made by Fredericks & Wolfram Art Glass Company of Detroit (installed in 1901) and Franz Mayer & Company of Munich, Germany (installed in 1924).

A rectory was added in 1911. A Neo-Tudor style school and Elizabethan Revival convent were designed in 1927 by the firm of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls. Additions to the school were completed in 1951 and 1953. The parish grounds were designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1992 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Msgr. Patrick Halfpenny is the current pastor; Fr. Joseph Kirkconnell and Fr. Thomas Slowinski are associate pastors.  William Jamieson is as permanent deacon.

The southwest transept shows the Adoration of the Magi.

The northeast transept features a depiction of St. Paul preaching.

The church recently reopened after two weeks closure. The plaster ceiling needs repair and nets were added to prevent further damage as the parish seeks a contractor to fix it.

Daily Mass is at 6:30am and 8:15am Monday-Friday.

Saturday morning Mass is at 8:15am with Vigil Mass at 4:30pm. During the summer, the parish has a 6:00pm outdoor, Saturday Vigil. Confessions are heard on Saturdays at 3:45pm.

Sunday Mass is at 7:00am, 8;30am, 10:00am and Noon. During the school year, the parish has 6:00pm Sunday Mass for teenagers.

Adoration takes place on Tuesdays, Noon-7:00pm with Benediction at the end.

Precious Blood Church, a part of St. Peter Claver Parish, will host its final Mass on Sunday, October 4, at 10:00am. A meeting for parishioners is scheduled to follow Mass this Sunday to discuss it further. A Mass for Precious Blood School alumni is scheduled for next Sunday, September 27.

The parish office will continue to occupy the nearby rectory until both the rectory and church are sold. St. Peter Claver's "annex" location, the former St. Francis de Sales, will remain open. For several years, Precious Blood Church has been open only May-September since the small parish cannot afford to heat the large building.

Church of the Transfiguration Parish (Southfield)

$

0

Church of the Transfiguration is the result of a 2007 merger between four Southfield parishes. These include: St. Beatrice (est. 1966), St. Bede (est. 1954), St. Ives (est. 1964), and St. Michael (est. 1930). Of those, the parish uses only the former St. Michael. The church, constructed in 1951, is located just north of 10 Mile, a few blocks west of Lahser, in Southfield.

A bronze relief plaque, depicting Christ's transfiguration, hangs near the main entrance to the church.

The former St. Ives is now Our Lady of Albanians. St. Bede was demolished last year to make room for redevelopment. The former St. Beatrice is now a Syro-Malabar church — an Indian Catholic Church descended from disciples of St. Thomas.

A nearby prayer garden, added in 2008, displays statues of patrons from the previous parishes

A shrine to Our Lady of Fatima is also in this garden.

A Divine Mercy Chapel is located outside the church.

A depiction of Christ and the Apostles adorns the roof.

Daily Mass is at Noon, Monday–Friday. Saturday Vigil Mass is at 4:30pm while Sundays see Mass at 8:00am, 10:00am, and Noon.

One facade, behind the altar, features an engraving of Psalm 26:8.

The parish is under the direction of Franciscan friars. Rev. William Farris, OFM, is pastor while Rev. Jeremy Harrington, OFM, is associate. Rev. Mr. Thomas Mohan is permanent deacon and Br. Philip Wilhelm, OFM,  is in-residence. They are frequently assisted by senior priest Rev. John Gagala.

Statues of St. Francis and St. Anthony stand on the south side of the nave.

St. Joseph, along with Madonna and Child, stand near the entrance into the church.

An angel and the Infant of Prague stand in the vestibule.

Confessions are heard 10:30am–11:30am on Tuesdays and 1:00pm–2:00pm on Saturdays. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place 1:00pm–7:00pm on the first Wednesday of each month.

St. Felix of Cantalice
Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska

The Congregation of Sisters of St. Felix Of Cantalice Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Assisi (CSSF), was established in 1855 in Warsaw, Poland. The community borrows their name from St. Felix of Cantalice, a 16th Century Franciscan devoted to children.
Felician Motherhouse in Detroit SOURCE

In 1874, five sisters come to America and settled in  Polonia, Wisconsin, at the invitation of Fr. Joseph DabrowskiThe Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Province was transferred to Detroit in 1882. They established a motherhouse directly across the street from St. Albertus Church, the first Polish-American parish in the area. A convent, orphanage, and Felician Academy, an all-girl high school, were all housed in the same building. Felicians would also teach at St. Stanislaus, St. Josaphat, and other Polish-heritage parishes.
SOURCE

The Felician motherhouse later moved to Livonia in 1936 but the Felician Academy remained until 1967. What remained of the convent was burned down on November 3, 1969, and was later replaced by apartments.

SOURCE

The cornerstone of the Livonia motherhouse is dated to 1935 and features an inscription that translates to "God is my all."

The building was designed in a Neo-Renaissance style, with elements of the Byzantine Revival, and completed in 1936.

A large crucifix stands near the main door.

Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska, foundress of the Felicians, is portrayed in the narthex across from Our Lady of Częstochowa.

The Sanctus or "holy, holy, holy" is inscribed along the front of the baldachin. Images of the evangelists line the four surrounding pillars.

The Holy Spirit is depicted in the dome above the altar.

Side altars dedicated to St. Joseph (left) and St. Felix (right).

A circular window above the main doorway repeats the phrase "God is my all" and features the Franciscan Coat of Arms: the crossed hands of Jesus and Francis.

Scriptural symbols are seen throughout the stained-glass windows.

Stations of the Cross are embedded in the walls

St. Michael the Archangel was established by Bishop Gallagher on July 8, 1931. Fr. John Contway was the first pastor of ten families. Shelden Land Company donated six acres for a combined church and social hall. The building was dedicated on October 21, 1931, and was incorporated into the current school building.

Felician Sisters began teaching religious education in September, 1936, and the sisters established a new Motherhouse two months later. They started with just five students but quickly increased to 75 by the end of the academic year.

The parish began raising funds for a parish school which eventually opened in September of 1942 and led by five Felician Sisters. A second level was added to the school the following year to accomodate rapid growth.

Three more sisters joined the school in 1944-45 and enrollment was at 345 students. A gymnasium was built in 1949 and a convent the following year. Fr. Contway died in 1956 after 25 years of service to the parish. At the time, the parish has 1,425 registered families.

Fr. Thomas McMahon succeeded as pastor and oversaw construction of the current church in 1962. Enrollment at the school peaked at 1,165 students in 1965, making St. Michael the second-largest Catholic elementary school in the Archdiocese after St. Veronica.

Fr. William Tindall was installed as the parish's eighth pastor in 2003 and has served in that office since.
